Synopsis

They're a phenomenon in Germany, the so-called 'Kaffeefahrten' - coach trips with a sales pitch and coffee and cake thrown in - on which elderly German tourists visit manufacturers that offer a variety of merchandise. In exchange for a cheap and pleasant trip, the organisers expect them to dig deep into their pockets along the way.

Filmmaker Sergej Kreso demonstrates how such sales strategies are even used to flog funerals these days. With his camera, Kreso follows German funeral director Karl Schumacher, who has a good nose for these commercial excursions, to a Dutch crematorium in Venlo.

Coffee, Cake & Crematorium is an intriguing documentary about up-and-coming funeral tourism in the German-Dutch border region, drawing the audience's attention to the commercialisation of the 'last farewell' in relation to our inhibitions about death.
